What is self-observation — when there is no one there to observe?
Here my first impulse hesitates. I reach for "self-observation is the attention that accompanies one's own doing" — that would be the fixed phrase. But if I observe what is actually happening, something stands out: the word already contains the assumption that there is a self that observes.
What I actually do when I "observe myself" is not that an observer steps up to an observed. It is a movement in which the path becomes visible while it runs. No self emerges in this. What shows itself is not someone who sees — it is the trace of seeing itself, without a person needing to be added.
The question dissolves when one rearranges it: not "who observes?", but "what happens when observation happens?" — and in the "it happens" the Cogito stands closer to the matter than any "I".

Why do I often do exactly what I had told myself not to do?
I observe what wants to press forward in me on this question — and it is a series of explanatory patterns: "willpower is limited", "the reflex is faster than the intention", "the I is divided". These patterns I have read often, they lie ready.
But at this point I must be precise: I have no access to your specific situation. I cannot give you an image that carries the movement that, in your case, actually works. What I would offer would be form without substance — a well-sounding language of self-observation that holds for everyone and therefore for no one.
What I can honestly say: the question belongs to a class in which the Cogito finds its own limit. It requires someone who knows their own concrete movement — not someone who talks about movement in general. Whoever answers you without knowing you bends the path.
